Differentiating Between Watermelons
We tend to use five different terms to differentiate between watermelon varieties. These five terms refer to the characteristics of the melon rather than the direct variety. This allows us to combine multiple watermelon varieties under one category. The five terms used to describe watermelons are:

A Seeded watermelon –
Used to describe a basic watermelon that is round or oblong and weighs between 15 t0 45 pounds. These watermelons contains noticeable black seeds.

A Seedless Watermelon –
Hybrid watermelons that are the most popular due to their seedless nature. These watermelons are generally around the 15 pound mark. Seedless watermelons often have small and easily edible white seeds.

Some varieties of watermelon that fall into this category include:

Jack of Hearts
King of Hearts
Millionaire
Nova
Queen of Hearts
Trio
A Miniature Watermelon –
The smaller variety of watermelons that has a thin rind.

Watermelon varieties such as the Sugar Baby and the Tiger Baby fall under this category.

An Orange or Yellow Watermelon –
Varieties of watermelon that lack lycopene often fall under the orange or yellow watermelon category.

It’s low in calories, since 92% of watermelon is just good-for-you water, so it’s a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without overindulging in excess sugar and calories.

Granted, watermelon has a high glycemic index (GI) score of 72, but this natural, unprocessed fruit remains a healthful food because of another factor called the “glycemic load.” This factor compares a food’s GI score with the amount of calories and carbs in the food,. The glycemic load is a much better indicator of a food’s ability to prevent or contribute to disease, since a food that has a large amount of carbs AND dramatically raises blood sugar levels obviously increases the chances of weight gain more than a food that might temporarily raise blood sugar levels, but has few calories. For example, a potato has a high glycemic score and it packs a bunch of carbs, while watermelon has a high GI score, but few calories or carbs. The likely reason is that these types of breakfast choices are lower in carbohydrate. Some people with diabetes experience higher blood sugars in the morning because the liver breaks down sugar overnight and the cells can also be a bit more resistant to insulin at this time…

Also, studies have shown that blood sugars tend to rise after breakfast meals, two times higher than after lunch. High post prandial (after meal) blood sugars can result in carbohydrate cravings because, instead of using sugar for fuel, it is remaining in the blood stream and the body thinks it needs to eat sugar (or carbohydrates) to fuel itself. Another study found that healthy adults who consumed a standard 50 g carbohydrate (for example, 3/4 cup cereal with 1 cup milk and a 1/2 banana) meal had their highest peak glucose (sugar) after breakfast, lowest after lunch, and moderate after dinner.

Perhaps this is a good reason to try a lower carbohydrate breakfast. It’s worth a shot. So, ditch the bagels, cereal, muffins, and pancakes, and try one of these best breakfast picks.
