Differentiating Between Watermelons
We tend to use five different terms to differentiate between watermelon varieties. These five terms refer to the characteristics of the melon rather than the direct variety. This allows us to combine multiple watermelon varieties under one category. The five terms used to describe watermelons are:

A Seeded watermelon –
Used to describe a basic watermelon that is round or oblong and weighs between 15 t0 45 pounds. These watermelons contains noticeable black seeds.

A Seedless Watermelon –
Hybrid watermelons that are the most popular due to their seedless nature. These watermelons are generally around the 15 pound mark. Seedless watermelons often have small and easily edible white seeds.

Some varieties of watermelon that fall into this category include:

Jack of Hearts
King of Hearts
Queen of Hearts
A Miniature Watermelon –
The smaller variety of watermelons that has a thin rind.

Watermelon varieties such as the Sugar Baby and the Tiger Baby fall under this category.

An Orange or Yellow Watermelon –
Varieties of watermelon that lack lycopene often fall under the orange or yellow watermelon category.

Some watermelon varieties that fall under this category include:

Diabetes – Watermelon Board watermelon.org
‘…Watermelon is a great inclusion in the diabetic diet. It is a source of vitamins, such as vitamins A and C; minerals, such as potassium; and fiber. It’s low in calories, since 92% of watermelon is just good-for-you water, so it’s a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without overindulging in excess sugar and calories.

Granted, watermelon has a high glycemic index (GI) score of 72, but this natural, unprocessed fruit remains a healthful food because of another factor called the “glycemic load.” This factor compares a food’s GI score with the amount of calories and carbs in the food,. The glycemic load is a much better indicator of a food’s ability to prevent or contribute to disease, since a food that has a large amount of carbs AND dramatically raises blood sugar levels obviously increases the chances of weight gain more than a food that might temporarily raise blood sugar levels, but has few calories. For example, a potato has a high glycemic score and it packs a bunch of carbs, while watermelon has a high GI score, but few calories or carbs. The former will increase the chances of those extra calories being funneled into fat cells, but watermelon just fills you up, without filling you out. (Ever hear of anyone getting fat on watermelon? Not!)..”

Watermelon – The World’s Healthiest Foods whfoods.com

“..These cyclists were participating in 15.5-mile time trial on a mountainous course and they consumed about one quart of watermelon puree every 15 minutes while riding in the trial. (A control group of riders consumed a sports beverage containing a similar level of total carbs.) The researchers determined that the antioxidant capacity in the riders’ bloodstreams was significantly increased post-exercise through consumption of the watermelon puree. ..

between 3–6 cups of watermelon juice per day over a period of several weeks. What the researchers found was a steady and well-maintained level of citrulline in the bloodstream of the participants, yet an increased level of arginine. They concluded from these findings that citrulline from the watermelon juice had undergone conversion into arginine, while still leaving plenty of citrulline to stabilize blood levels in the study participants. This conversion provides us with even more evidence for watermelon as a fruit that can lower our risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes since arginine deficiency—especially chronic moderate or temporarily serve deficiency—has been linked to increase risk of both health problems. ..”

Tasty Solutions for Diabetes Breakfast Menu part 1 – YouTube

What to Eat for Breakfast When You Have Diabetes By Debra Manzella, RN | Medically reviewed by Richard N. Fogoros, MD Updated April 27, 2018 verywellhealth.com
“..Studies have shown that eating a larger, higher fat and higher protein breakfast may actually help to reduce blood sugars and weight. The likely reason is that these types of breakfast choices are lower in carbohydrate. Some people with diabetes experience higher blood sugars in the morning because the liver breaks down sugar overnight and the cells can also be a bit more resistant to insulin at this time…

Also, studies have shown that blood sugars tend to rise after breakfast meals, two times higher than after lunch. High post prandial (after meal) blood sugars can result in carbohydrate cravings because, instead of using sugar for fuel, it is remaining in the blood stream and the body thinks it needs to eat sugar (or carbohydrates) to fuel itself. Another study found that healthy adults who consumed a standard 50 g carbohydrate (for example, 3/4 cup cereal with 1 cup milk and a 1/2 banana) meal had their highest peak glucose (sugar) after breakfast, lowest after lunch, and moderate after dinner.

Perhaps this is a good reason to try a lower carbohydrate breakfast. It’s worth a shot. So, ditch the bagels, cereal, muffins, and pancakes, and try one of these best breakfast picks.
Grilled Peanut Butter and Strawberry Sandwich

Instead of grilled cheese make a grilled peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread. The peanut butter gets nice and gooey too which makes it delicious. Chop up a few strawberries for added fiber and sweetness. The combination of protein and fiber will help you to stay full and satisfied.

1 whole grain bread sandwich thin (make sure it has at least 3 g of fiber)
1 1/2 tablespoons all natural peanut butter
1/2 cup sliced strawberries

Is Erythritol a Healthy Sugar Alternative? The Lazy Person’s Guide dietvsdisease.org
“…In one review, erythritol was shown to decrease dental plaque, oral bacteria, and the overall number of dental caries compared to xylitol and sorbitol (3).

In a clinical study of 485 school children over a 3-year period, the use of erythritol decreased and prolonged the development of dental caries when compared with other alternative sugars (4).

On the other hand, another study found that erythritol had no effect on plaque or oral hygiene when compared to other sugar alcohols (5)…

Many people report GI distress, specifically nausea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and increased gas when consuming erythritol.

However, of all sugar alcohols available, erythritol is shown to cause less of these negative symptoms due to its small molecular size….

Summary: Erythritol and stevia are comparable sugar alternatives, though stevia has a few more health benefits. Honey is another great natural sweetener with many health benefits.

Erythritol is a good choice if you’re looking for a calorie-free sweetener that looks and tastes similar to table sugar.

It’s also a great sugar alternative if you have problems with blood sugar regulation.

The few negative side effects of erythritol are minor, avoidable or need more research to prove.

You may also want to consider natural sugar alternatives like stevia.”

Fit Food: the Benefits of Turkey

“While turkey gets its day in the sun (er, the oven) on Thanksgiving, the bird is sometimes overshadowed by more popular choices like chicken or beef the rest of the year. But this nutritional powerhouse is a great way to add variety to your daily diet — without tacking on extra fat and unwanted calories. Check it out:

One 3.5 oz serving (about the size of a deck of cards) of skinless turkey breast packs 30 grams of protein—but only 161 calories and 4 grams of fat.
Turkey is loaded with B vitamins, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and zinc — those are some serious nutrients. Plus it’s rich in selenium, an antioxidant necessary for thyroid metabolism and boosting immunity.
It also contains tryptophan, an amino acid that triggers serotonin production and helps you catch some zzz’s.

Food Fight!: Turkey White Meat vs. Dark Meat
By: Dana Angelo White, M.S., R.D., A.T.C. foodnetwork.com

It’s the perpetual Thanksgiving debate: turkey legs or breast meat? We all have our taste preferences, but which one is healthier?

White Meat

Ditching the turkey skin is the first step to a lighter meal. Poultry skin is high in calories and fat. Keep the skin intact to cook the bird (it helps retain moisture) but remove before digging in.

Because this portion has a lower fat content, the white meat can dry out more easily. Less fat also means more protein, but don’t get too excited: The protein content of white meat is only slightly higher than dark meat. Cuts of lean protein like turkey breast are also rich in vitamins and minerals like niacin, vitamin B6, iron, zinc and selenium.

Dark Meat

The higher fat content of the legs, wings and thighs (aka dark meat) imparts a lot of flavor, plus helps the meat stay moist. A 3-ounce portion of dark meat is slightly higher in cholesterol and contains an additional 20 calories and 2 grams more fat than an equal portion of white meat. The good (and often surprising) news is the type of fat; dark meat contains predominantly the heart-healthy mono- and polyunsaturated kinds. Dark meat also boasts a high mineral content and is more plentiful in iron, zinc and selenium.

Which Part of the Chicken is the Healthiest to Eat and the Best Way to Cook It? By Holly Klamer, RD caloriesecrets.net
“..Even though chicken is shed in a positive light, keep in mind different parts of the chicken can vary nutritionally.

Wings and darker meat are higher in calories and fat compared to the leaner white chicken breast.

How you cook your chicken can also greatly vary the nutrition of chicken. Frying and leaving the skin on increase the energy density, but taking the skin off and roasting chicken can provide lower energy density…

Leanest part of the chicken

Skinless boneless chicken breast is considered the leanest part of the chicken. Buying bone in cuts of meat can be a cheaper option, and according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (2) eating bone in chicken doesn’t affect nutrition value and may actually help you eat smaller portions.

According to the National Chicken Council (3), a 3.5 ounce of skinless chicken breast provides about 165 calories from 31 grams of protein and about 3.5 grams of fat. Keeping the skin on the breast bumps the calories up to just under 200 calories.

Thigh meat without the skin provides just over 200 calories with higher fat content at about 11 grams. Leaving the skin on the thigh bumps the calories up to about 230 calories.

The highest calorie density cut of chicken is wings with the skin on. A 3.5 ounce serving provides about 290 calories and 19.5 grams of fat…”

Is Chicken High in Cholesterol? by JESSICA BRUSO Aug. 14, 2017 livestrong.com
Chicken and Cholesterol

The American Heart Association recommends you limit your cholesterol intake to 300 mg per day. If you have high cholesterol already, limit your cholesterol intake to 200 mg per day. A 3 oz. serving of skinless roasted chicken contains between 70 mg and 80 mg of dietary cholesterol, depending on whether it is dark meat or light meat. This is about 25 percent of your recommended cholesterol for the day…”

The Healthiest Way to Eat Chicken Marion Nestle Mar 23, 2012 theatlantic.com
“..A good source of protein, chicken is best for you when baked in the oven or stir fried with your favorite vegetables. Note that the dark meat has a bit more saturated fat and cholesterol…

Buy whole chickens so you aren’t paying someone else to cut it up for you. Cutting a chicken is easy and YouTube has plenty of videos that explain how to do it.

The cheapest chicken is industrially produced, meaning that the chickens are raised in huge flocks indoors under crowded conditions, treated with antibiotics to prevent illness and promote rapid growth, and are ready to slaughter six weeks after hatching.

If you don’t want to eat chicken raised this way, you should look for birds that were raised free-range without antibiotics and are Certified Organic, kosher, or halal — if you value such things. You will have to pay more for such meat but it will taste better. ..”

7 High-Cholesterol Foods to Avoid draxe.com
“..What High-Cholesterol Foods Should You Keep Eating?

1. Eggs

Although the majority of dietary cholesterol in the U.S. diet comes from eggs and egg mixed dishes, research shows that egg consumption has little effect on LDL cholesterol and may actually improve HDL cholesterol levels. (14)

In a 2008 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, 28 overweight or obese male participants aged 40–70 years were instructed to reduce calorie intake by consuming a low-carbohydrate diet, and they were randomly assigned to supplement this diet with three eggs per day (640 milligrams of cholesterol) or a cholesterol-free egg substitute, which was provided to them for 12 weeks. The intervention resulted in significant reductions in body weight. LDL and triglyceride concentrations were similar between the two intervention groups, but HDL cholesterol concentrations were higher in the egg-supplemented group. (15)

It turns out that there are plenty of health benefits of eggs, and they can be consumed without worry…

What Is High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all cells of the body. Our bodies need cholesterol to make hormones that protect the body, vitamin D and bile salts that are necessary for the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Plus, the brain and nervous system depend on cholesterol for the creation of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

Our bodies make the cholesterol that we need, but we get cholesterol from our food too. If you have too much cholesterol, it starts to build up in your arteries and may lead to atherosclerosis, or the hardening of the arteries. Eventually, high cholesterol levels may cause heart and blood flow problems, leading to dangerous blood clots and inflammation that can cause heart attacks and strokes. High cholesterol levels alone do not determine if you are at risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Other factors include your blood pressure, whether or not you smoke, whether or not you have diabetes, and your age, sex and race. (18)..”

28 Fast-Food Chicken Sandwiches—Ranked! eatthis.com
A fast food chicken sandwich is the Trojan Horse of diet bombs.
“..At first glance, health-conscious folks may think that picking up a chicken sandwich from a fast food joint is a safe bet. After all, poultry is known to be leaner than the mystery beef served in those double-stacked hamburgers. But just because chicken holds a star reputation as the low-calorie, low-fat option on your dinner table, it doesn’t mean a chicken sandwich is your best option when dining out or zipping through the drive-thru. You think you’d be able to rely on this star protein, but once it’s injected with solutions of chemicals, preservatives, and additives and then coated, breaded, and deep fried, many of these chicken sandwiches can set you back just as badly as a burger and fries…”

Sweet Potato Fries

Health: Cooking Sweet Potatoes w/Sal (healthfitnesslifeguy)

How to Make Sal’s Sweet Potato Fries
1-warm a frying pan with olive oil at heat #3
2-cut a sweet potato in whatever size you desire, but thinner the better
3-place one slice at a time on a frying pan as “evenly” and flat as possible using as much space you can fit in the pan
4-add some pepper seasoning on top
5-cover the pan (air tight as possible) for quicker heating
6-cook 10 minutes or so until you hear constant fast sizzling
7-flip each potato and then add season pepper again
8-repeat step 6
9-ready and hot, which I recommend putting turmeric for healthy tasting (see down below for #healthbenefits)
10-Let it “cool” for a couple of minutes before eating, which I myself can get very tempted to eat right away. However, it’s hot in your mouth and you won’t be able to savor the flavor and taste! 🙂
